Although there is evidence that French and British fishermen wore cardigan types since the seventeenth century, this garment was invented during the first half of the nineteenth century by James Thomas Brudenell, Earl of Cardigan in Wales. Military, feeling cramped in his regulatory sweater, he would have split his garment collar to the size of a sword. Originally, he had no sleeves and looked like the vest, but he always had small pockets.
